01 — THE OPPORTUNITY BENEATH MANCHESTER FEET

Available when needed, all day, all year, GeoConnect Manchester will use naturally occurring geothermal heat from deep beneath Wythenshawe.

Two geothermal wells will access water approximately 4 km underground, where temperatures are expected to reach around 115°C.

The heat will be supplied through a new network serving Wythenshawe Hospital and Manchester Airport.

Decarbonising the UK’s Third-Largest Airport

Manchester Airport is one of the North’s most important economic assets and a major part of the UK’s national infrastructure. Heat generation at Manchester Airport represents approximately 50% of MAG’s remaining scope 1 and scope 2 emissions. The airport currently relies on gas-fired boilers serving individual buildings.

GeoConnect Manchester would:

Provide a major contribution to Manchester Airport’s 2038 net zero target.
Reduce reliance on gas-fired heating.
Provide secure, continuous low-carbon heat.
Reduce pressure on electrical infrastructure compared with widespread air source heat pump installation.
